Fifteen Hours of Chess
Campers are divided into groups: THE KINGS (advanced) and THE KNIGHTS (beginners), with an intermediate group, THE ROOKS, during busier weeks. International Chess Master Larry Evans teaches each group separately, while his staff supervises casual and tournament play in the others. Snacks and drinks are served between classes. To end each day, all groups merge for an outdoor, Harry Potter-like team event on our giant chess set!
Larry’s teaching technique, dubbed THE EVANS METHOD by the United States Chess Federation, is used in dozens of schools throughout San Diego. Featured on The Tonight Show and Inside Edition, The Evans Method makes chess fun for children of all ages and levels. His cumulative merit system rewards camper participation. Campers earn prizes at the end of each day and a trophy at the end of each week.
